A former boxer and jazz record store owner, Berry Gordy, Jr. (born November 28, 1929) first got involved with producing and writing R&B songs in 1955.

Gordy's mother, Raynoma, was a child prodigy in music and played eleven instruments and introduced him to music. Then in 1979, he released an album on Motown as a member of the group, Apollo. Gordy was brought home from the hospital to live in the historic home that housed the Hitsville Motown Recording Studios on West Grand Blvd.
